Patriots Cove opens it's waterway to vet and their families for the first time
To celebrate opening day of trout season, Patriots Cove hosted an inaugural fishing event called Fish for the Fallen, to honor fallen American heroes and share their waterway with six veterans injured in the line of duty.
Volunteer mentors helped participants fish safely and enjoy their outdoors experience.Later that day, Patriots Cove opened its gates to the community for the first time. Jeff Swire, co-founder of Patriots Cove, and Karen Boback, state representative, led a tribute memorial for fallen military and public service heroes. Patriots Cove is a local nonprofit organization that provides trout fishing exclusively to injured veterans, first responders, and their caregivers. Army retired Sergeant First Class Jeff Swire and his wife Melissa Swire founded Patriots Cove to give back to those who have served. With the support of Hunts for Healing, members of their community, and various businesses around northeast Pennsylvania, they have restored a piece of the Beaver Run Waterway to a sanctuary specifically for native brook trout.
Jeff Swire, co-founder of Patriots Cove, stated, “We have seen that our hard work and vision to provide a place of healing is on track but we believe we have much more that we can provide to our nation’s heroes, our environment, and our community.”The Swires have obtained grants and support from local businesses to aid them in their initiatives. Employees from Williams and T-Town Sheds worked tirelessly to help stream, trail, and lodging improvements. All of which are wheelchair-accessible trails, docks, and lodging designed to accommodate any veteran or first responder regardless of their injuries.
Their efforts, along with the help of members in the community, have made this safe haven possible. Over the next few months, Patriots Cove will begin expanding their facility to include lodging and events for caregivers as well. They understand the impact caregivers have on veterans and first responders, and recognize the importance of social, emotional, and physical support from fellow caregivers.
